What on Earth Can I Do and Resources Review

I was offered to review What on Earth Can I Do?What On Earth Can I Do Notebooking Journal ,What on Earth Can I Do? Junior Notebooking Journal  and What on Earth Can I Do? Coloring Book   from a company I love called Apologia Educational Ministries . I highly respect their work and their products, so I was really excited to get to try out these products.  I knew of the quality educational materials they put out and these were no exception to that. They are high quality inside and out!

I’ll go over each one and how we used them for my son (8 years old, 3rd grade).  The age range on these that I got to review are grades 1-6, but I think they could easily be adapted for older kids as well if you had several grades in you home.

What on Earth Can I Do?

This hardcover book retails for $39.00.  It is filled with great lessons and stories that help your child begin to see how God can use them to do great things, and what it means to really put God first in practical ways in their lives. Each lesson starts with “The Big Idea” which is is a introduction to what the main topic of the lesson will be. It is followed by a short section that shows what the learning objectives will be for the lesson. After that there are so many really great stories that really bring to life what the lesson  is. They use real people and real events in history. I will tell you the first one I read brought me to tears as  I was reading it.  The story just really brought to light the beautiful strength of the human spirit and how it can be used to glorify God. There are lots of other features that are used to really bring the lesson to life. I honestly did not know if I would like this curriculum when I saw it come up for review. I took the review becasue I trusted the company. I am really picky when it comes to teaching the concepts of the Bible and faith. I take it really serious in our schooling and I don’t want anyone else messing up what I have worked hard to teach my child. This curriculum did a beautiful job  in helping me lay some great foundation of a strong faith in my child. It gave him real world examples and not just pretty fluffy words or sweet little tales. It helped me show him that God is in the everyday workings and how even in some of the worst circumstances He is always there and can help him just like he helped the people and events in the stories. We have stopped school for the summer but I am really looking forward to picking up where we stopped off with this curriculum next school year.

I used this as a read aloud to my son. I am sure he could have read it himself but I enjoyed taking the time to read to him. It allowed us to stop and talk or discuss things as needed.  In the beginning  of the book it lays out really nicely how to use each section of the book and a real basic lesson plan. You can follow their basic plan or slow it down ( or up ) if you wanted too. We like to slow it down a little and really soak in everything. But I wanted to mention it becasue it was a really nice option and usually you have to have a teachers manual to get all of that, which brings me to the next resource.

What on Earth Can I Do? Junior Notebooking Journal

This retail for $24.00 is such a great accompaniment to this study.  I would highly recommend getting this if you buy the the study I mentioned above.  I LOVED this notebooking journal!!!  I really like notebooking anyway but sometimes I have a hard time knowing what to ask my son to put on the notebooking page. I always have great intentions but they don’t always translate so well. My son doesn’t like to draw or write so it doesn’t always work out like I would like it too.  This Junior Notebooking journal was my answer to that issue.  From this point on I will always get one when using any of the Apologia material that have them available.  This one is perfect for the reluctant or the younger student, there is also one for the older student. I talk about that one next.  The beginning of the spiral bound notebook gives you great explanations of how to use this resource. It is then followed by a great section of lesson plans that tell you what to read in the What on Earth Can I Do?  book and then what pages of the journal to do. All of the pages are filled with easy to do work for your younger students. Writing stresses my son out  and if he has to write to much all of his energy goes into the writing part and not the learning part. This journal allows him to enjoy the lesson but still give him something to do to cement the lesson.

What On Earth Can I Do Notebooking Journal

This one retails for $24.00 too. The difference between the two is this one is meant for your older student. There is much more writing  and more in depth details on this one. My son was not ready for this one so I would just read the questions out loud to him and we discussed his answers. I think when he is older this one would be better suited for him. I like that as he grows there is a version that he can graduate to  next. You can see samples of each by clicking the name. It will give you a good idea which one is better suited for your child.

What on Earth Can I Do? Coloring Book

This is a fun little coloring book that goes along with the lessons. It  retails for $8.00. This was really convenient for when my youngest child wanted to do some “school ” with us. She loves to color so it was a nice way to let her join in.  The pictures were  easy to color and both kids enjoyed using this resource.

I really enjoyed this curriculum. If you are looking for a good Bible lesson curriculum that is biblically based I would really recommend you check this out. It is well grounded in the word of God and really gets your students thinking. It can open up some really good conversations between you and your child that can lead to a deeper understanding of what real faith as defined by your family and your values is.
