Fun Lunch Idea- Stromboli with the Goofy Goobers

When I saw this Stromboli idea on the Vegan Homeschoolers blog I knew we had to give it a try. I loved her idea of having the kids do the cooking. I think learning how to prepare meals is a great life skill that every kid should learn.

Over the years I have taught my kids how to make a few meals and I am always on the lookout for more meals that are easy for them to try.  They have become pretty good cooks!

I told them about the Stromboli and they were excited to give it a try, they would cook with me every day if I would let them. I do let them cook more now, and I found if they help me cook then they are more likely to eat what we made together.

After washing their hands we got started. The first thing they did was get the pizza dough started. Use your own recipe or give ours a try. Click here for our favorite pizza dough recipe.

While the dough was rising in our bread machines I made the pizza sauce. I added in half a can of white beans (drained and rinsed well) to pizza sauce. I put it in the blender and let it run until it was really smooth. This adds some fiber and protein to the pizza sauce, it also adds a little bit of creaminess to the sauce too. Click here for our favorite pizza sauce recipe.

Once the dough was done it was time to pat it out. We moved everything to the kitchen table so we would have more room to work.Sydney patted out the dough into a large circle.

Then it was Jayden’s turn to spread the pizza sauce.

After the sauce was spread both kids sprinkled on some nutritional yeast. Are you wondering what nutritional yeast is and why would you want to use it? Click here to find out.

Even the youngest goofy goober got in on the cooking action today. It was her job to sprinkle the vegan cheese over the sauce. She was very proud of herself for being able to help cook.

Sydney then rolled it up and cut 3 small vents on the top.

We put it in a preheat oven for 15 minutes. It looks like a big loaf of french bread when it comes out of the oven. This is what the inside looked like when I sliced it open! Soo yummy!

All of the kids loved this meal. I served it with some fruit and homemade popcorn (get the recipe here). Of course a fun lunch with the Goofy Goobers called for a Goofy Goober Green Smoothie (recipe coming soon!).

I made one for Jeremy and I too. I loaded ours up with mushrooms, red peppers, onions, kale, and some fresh basil from my garden. I followed the same steps as the kids did. This is what  ours looked after it was baked and what the inside looked like when I sliced it open!

This was a really fun meal to make with the kids. Everyone go to do something to help with this meal which I love!  They each really took pride in what they were doing. No rushing or fighting at all!  Another neat thing I want to mention is this meal was really kid friendly. It was easy to pick up and eat like a sandwich which made it very appealing for the kids (especially the youngest). It was also really easy to just put what they wanted in it, so no fussing or “do I have to eat that?” questions. I hope you will give this fun meal idea a try and if you have kids I hope you let them help you make it. Cooking together is a great way to build memories that will last a lifetime!

  1. I’m so glad you all liked the Stromboli!! It really is a fun dish to make and you can sneak in so many good things. Especially helpful for the kiddos that are truly picky. I love your addition of beans in the sauce. I like to use zucchini in pasta sauces. Our boys loathe zucchini, but they never notice it in their sauce. Just puree it smooth and it’s ready! 🙂
