Trail Mix
I was recently at the store waiting in line to check out. I started looking at all the “convenient snacks” that are there for you to give to your kids or yourself. There was nothing even remotely healthy there. The healthiest thing was a bag of trail mix. I thought- well that isn’t to bad so I picked it up and looked what was in it. Disappointment set in as I looked at all the ingredients. Of course my kids looked over and saw me holding it and got excited! They thought I had decided to get it for them. I quickly put it back and explained I would make them a trail mix when we got home.
When I got home I pulled together some things and quickly made a fun and easy trail mix for them. One of the best things ( besides the price- mine was sooo much cheaper than that little bag and I made a bunch!) is that I could make it with the things they liked so no more throwing away half the bag becasue they didn’t like those weird looking things that are sometimes in those mixes.
I made 2 different batches-
1. Pretzels, popcorn, rice chex, almonds (with some ground flaxseed lightly shaken over it)
2.Popcorn,rice chex, almonds, peanuts, and golden raisins (same with the flaxseed)
I shook each batch up and put it in gallon size ziploc bags for easy storage. This would be a great snack for traveling or just to have on hand for a quick snack. My kids loved it. They grab a small bowl and fill up at snack time along with an apple and they are happy kids!
I wanted to share this snack idea with all of you so you see how easy it is make a quick and easy snack that is budget friendly!
What would you put in your kids trail mix snack?
That looks so tasty! I make ours with pretzels, raisins, peanuts and M&Ms (not so healthy I know but I just love that tiny bit of sweetness).
I started with some chocolate chips but had to stop becasue that is all my youngest daughter would eat! So I had to stop putting those in and now she eats all of it!lol!
