IXL Math and Language Arts Review

IXL review

IXL has two great supplemental online  courses that I recently got to review. I reviewed the IXL Math and IXL Language Arts programs with my 4th grade son.

Something important to point out about this program right off the bat is it is supposed to be supplemental which means you use it in addition to your regular curriculum or for review purposes. This makes it great for public school kids and for homeschooled kids!

IXL Language Arts

The language arts part was really easy to use and understand. I loved that this was a supplemental curriculum becasue we had finally found a language arts curriculum that we really loved. Honestly though I felt like my son needed some extra practice. It  was really easy to find the topic we were studying and get him started on it.  The cool thing is if he missed a question then he could see the definition of what the question was about. This really helped him remember and most of the time after looking at the definition he could easily get the rest correct. He has never been one for being timed so at first that stressed him a little but I simply explained that time did not matter to me as long as he understood what we were learning about. Once I did that he ignored the timer, which was funny becasue I noticed he actually went faster when he ignored the timer and just looked at it as a reminder he needed to stay focused. This helped him not hop up and go run around the house like he is prone to doing! So please keep that in mind if you have a wiggle worm wandered like I do it can help!

IXL Math

The math part was really great for Jayden becasue I could go back and review pretty easily with him too. For example for some reason expanded form was a really tough things for Jayden. One minute he would get it and then the next he would forget it. I know all of you have had those topics with your kids, and no matter what I did it just stumped him again and again. We took a little break from it and then I explained it on our white board. Instead of going straight to his regular math curriculum we instead did a little work on the IXL math section for that. It seemed to help that we did something different  so then he could really see that he had gotten it down pat. Both sections are like I said above really user friendly.

Another way I used both sections was I let me son earn extra time on his Wii or on Minecraft  by doing extra sections and doing some reviewing. This was a good motivator for him and I really didn’t mind giving him extra time for extra school work. Our policy is for every section  (if he did well on it) I would give him ten extra minutes of his technology time.  If you have a child who loves  top play on things like that you may want to think about getting IXL then!

I think this is a good supplemental curriculum that would work for both homeschoolers and public school kids. It was great practice for my son and he never complained about doing it (and with us that is half the battle). I think the problems were easy enough for him to get confidence built but challenging enough for me to be able to tell if he knew it or not.
