One of our family’s favorite nights is Tuesday. Which, we have deemed Taco Tuesday! We make red lentil tacos, veggie cheese quesadillas, and of course this amazing salsa!! We snack on this for days after we make it. After putting pictures on Our  Facebook Page I was asked several times for the recipe. Jeremy was sweet enough to do a guest blog post for me with the recipe so we hope you all enjoy it!

The great thing about Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa is that it is 100% Plant based, Vegetarian, Vegan, super delicious , and very easy to make!

Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa is one of my favorite snacks. Not just because I’m Jeremy, although that is a great thing too, but because I just love chips and salsa. I have spent years trying to replicate a salsa that I had years ago, but I have never found a store brand that could touch it. I know everyone has their favorite brand at the store. We tend to never waiver away from that, but I ask you to give Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa a try. I can tell you that you will not be disappointed.

Let’s start with the grocery list!

Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa

Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa Ingredients:

  • 12 Roma Tomatoes
  • 1 Red Medium Onion
  • 1 White Medium Onion
  • ½ Jalapeño Pepper (Leave in the seeds for heat)
  • 1 Bell Pepper (Green, Orange or Red)
  • ½ Cup Cilantro
  • 1 ½ TBS Cumin
  • 1tsp Salt
  • 1 Clove of Garlic
  • A pinch of Black Pepper

*Some people may like to add a squeeze of Lime or Lemon juice (1 tsp or more per your flavor preference). I didn’t find that it enhanced the flavor, so I leave that out of my mixture.

One of the best parts about Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa recipe is that you can alter the ingredients to your taste buds. This actual recipe is for a mild to medium flavor. As a personal recommendation I add more Jalapeño (with seeds), extra cumin, probably an extra ¼ cup of cilantro, and Garlic Salt. This will really pack the punch.

Adding canned tomatoes can be a great way to add chunk to the mixture and maybe lessen the heat if you add to much spice, but on a value based recipe it annihilates the budget. Our family’s goal is to keep the items we make under the price that you would pay for processed foods that are not as good, or as healthy. So follow the recipe and the average breaks out to around $4 – $5 for the total servings. This recipe would fill up three of those little $3+ store brand salsa jars.

Jeremy’s Famous Homemade Salsa Step by Step

First step you need a good food processor. It helps to make it a nice mixture, and saves a whole lot of time. Now how you slice your veggies is up to you, but I like to quarter mine so that it’s easier on the processor.

[box type=”shadow” ]Now for the Jalapeño I would recommend cutting this one thing up into smaller pieces to help it spread out evenly. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to spicy food. I also will smash the clove of garlic.[/box]

I place all the ingredients, except for the tomatoes, into the processor. I like to pulse it first to break it down. Again you use your processor how you normally do, but you are looking for a nicely chopped up mixture. This will produce a lot of juice which can also be used for my wife’s Mexican rice recipe (coming soon). Once all the hot stuff is chopped up, pour it into a big mixing bowl and move to the roma tomatoes. Now the one reason I recommend roma tomatoes is because the hold their shape, and they don’t just turn to straight liquid like a regular slicing tomatoes.

With the tomatoes I simply cut of the ends (sit them to the side) and slice the tomatoes in half. Bang…you’re done! The tomatoes I try to pulse so that we can keep some chunkiness, but you can do it to your desire. Once done just pour the tomatoes over top of the vegetable mixture already waiting. Now back to those end pieces. I like to use as much of the tomatoes as possible. Waste not, want not is how I was raised, but I will cut the ends up in to little portions. They don’t contain all the juice that you get with the whole tomato. Once I have all the ends cut up, I throw them into the processor (no juice, just nice texture) and pulse these as well.

[box]Now these portions are great to add to the salsa, or this would be a good time for some freshly made guacamole. Recipe to come![/box]

Now that you have everything chopped up and in the mixing bowl, that’s right time to stir it up. I won’t explain how to do that, I’m hoping that part is pretty self-explanatory.

Now is the best part of the entire process, tasting the finished product. Right now I know that it’s a perfect medium flavor to me. I know some of you might prefer a really mild flavor, so you can always add more tomatoes (fresh or canned) in the case this basic recipe is too hot. Just adjust accordingly for you and your family’s taste!
