How to make Moon Sand! A easy, fun, and cheap way to encourage play! Turn off that TV and make some of this and watch those smiles and giggles start!

My oldest daughter was the one to introduce me to Moon Sand. She asked for it for Christmas one year when she was little.I think one of her grandparents ended up getting her some. She was telling me I should get some for my son who at the time was 3. I looked it up and after seeing the price I decided to make my own Moon Sand. Thanks to the internet you can find out how to make just about anything! After playing around with several recipes we came up with this simple one  for Moon Sand.

Moon Sand-

What you will need!

3 cups flour

1/2 cup baby oil

glitter (as much or as little as you can tolerate)

Mix the flour and the baby oil together in a big bowl. I started out using a large spatula and then went to using my hands. You need to kind of work it together for a little bit. The longer you mix it with your hands the better it gets. Start slowly adding glitter till you get to the point you like. You know its done when you can make a  ball with it.  If after a few minutes you still can not make a ball ( like the one in the picture above) ,you can add a little more baby oil. I would start with a tablespoon at a time. Add it and then mix with your hands till it gets to the point where you can mold it.

Once you get to the point where you can slightly mold it then it is ready to play with. I poured mine into a container that I had a lid to. It seemed to keep the mess not as bad becasue it was a little deeper that my usual play trays that I use for my sensory bins. I let my daughter play with this in the kitchen so I could just sweep up the mess once she was done. I didn’t want for this to get in my carpet becasue I was not sure how my vacuum cleaner could deal with it.  Use your own judgment on where you want your little one to play.

I went around the house and found little animals and some small containers for her to play with in her Moon Sand. To be honest she played with the little animals for about 5 minutes and then went to filling and dumping her small containers for the rest of the hour. Yes you read that right- she played with this for an hour! When she was done I put the lid on the moon sand container, changed her dress, and swept up. She plays in this all the time. When it starts to get low, I simply make some more. I use the store brand all purpose flour and big container of baby oil I got from the dollar store, so it is pretty cheap to make.

Here are some pictures from her  playtime.

She had a lot of fun playing with her Moon Sand, maybe you should make some up for the little one in your life!
