Peanut Butter Sushi Experience with recipe

I am always looking for ways to make learning fun! This great recipe engaged the mind and the stomach, and was so fun that I think the kids actually forgot they were learning ! For any educator that is like hitting a home run or making a touchdown!

The first thing I did was make the peanut butter sushi, which is also a has a Secret Agent Ingredient in it! Are you wondering what a Secret Agent Ingredient  is?Read about it below and then go check out our Secret Agent Recipe category!

[box type=”shadow” ]A Secret Agent Ingredient is an ingredient that adds nutritional power to a recipe but does not add overpowering flavor. It is a creative way to add in foods that your child (or yourself) may not normally go for. The Secret Agent Ingredient is usually in small amounts, but the way I look at it all those small amounts add up! [/box]

Peanut Butter Sushi Recipe

Ingredients:

a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter ( depending on how many you are feeding)

1 Tbsp of pumpkin puree (The Secret Agent Ingredient)

some whole wheat tortillas ( or whatever kind you have on hand-I had regular tortillas on hand today so  that is what I used)

Mix your peanut butter and pumpkin puree up together very well in a separate bowl.

Spread the mixture on your tortilla.

If you want to kick up the nutrition go ahead and sprinkle a little bit of ground flax seed or hemp seeds on top of the mixture ( or stir it in if you have a picky eater). Next you want to roll up the tortilla.

Wrap the rolled up tortilla in saran wrap and put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes. This step helps it stick together better.

Take it out of the fridge and unwrap it. Place it on a cutting board and find a good sharp knife.

All that is left to do is slice you “sushi” in whatever size pieces you want.

I thought to make this meal extra fun I would add several small foods that the kids could pick up with their chopsticks .You can’t eat sushi without chopsticks!! It really adds to the fun so go ahead and get some. I found mine at the grocery store for a couple of dollars. This is what our plate looked like.

Next week we will be learning about China in a small unit study so I found a beautiful film about China on Netflix instant streaming called – Discovery Atlas:China Revealed. I let the kids watch the movie at our coffee table. I lit some candles and put out one of our red sheets as a table cloth. I thought the red would help them remember the Chinese flag is all red.

After they ate and watched the movie I had a few fun crafts planned to help them remember what they had learned. We made Chinese flags and peasant hats. I read them a little bit about the peasants hats and why the chinese wore them. It was really interesting and I love learning new things so this was a great experience for me too. Of course we decorated our peasant hats ( which ended up in no way looking like anything any peasant would wear but it was fun. Even Charlye got in on the learning by making her own hat.

fun

The movie we watched talked about how the chinese love ping pong so what else could I do except create a ping pong table on the coffee table. We used balloons instead of a ping pong ball becasue I was afraid a window would get broken.

Let me answer this before anyone asks- Isn’t sushi Japanese food?

The answer is yes and no. Helpful huh?

Here is the explanation I found- Although in today’s society you will find Sushi served most often in a Japanese restaurant, it actually dates back to 7th Century China.  As a way of preserving fish, the Chinese people started making Sushi but without modern day refrigerators, they used the natural process of fermentation.   (source)

We had a blast today with all of this. I am excited to see what they remember next week when we officially start our China Study! If you are looking for a fun and creative way to engage the mind and the body I hope you will try out our sushi recipe and maybe one or two of our fun activities!

  1. Love this! We do that version of pb sushi too, but Silas calls it “pb roll up” and thinks it’s a whole different thing. Great idea to add the pumpkin puree! We are HUGE pumpkin fans so this will be a hit at my house.
