Purposeful Design: Understanding the Creation Review
I have really enjoyed reviewing Purposeful Design: Understanding the Creation by Purposeful Design. This beautiful and very sturdy book is designed so make you want to leave it out on the coffee table. It beckons you to pick it up and open it up. I purposely left it on our coffee table to see if it was just me that felt that way. It was not! Everyone in my house would pick it up and look though it including any guest who came to visit us.
Purposeful Design: Understanding the Creation is for all ages and seeks to help create a sense of wonder and amazement at all of God creation by starting with the Genesis account of creation (Day 1-7). But this is not the typical Genesis account book that all of us have seen before. It is meant to create awe. It does that by really explaining some of the amazing parts of each of the days. For example Chapter 3 is the third day- creation of the dry land and vegetation. The chapter goes over things like the importance of vegetation and plants to human,interesting facts about the common apple ,and ways in which plants are useful to you and me.
What I love is this is not a super wordy book. It uses simple language that anyone can understand .Instead of using big fancy words to draw you in and amaze you it instead lets the facts lure you in and make you think.
Chapter 4 was really interesting to me when it talked about the seasons and the benefits to each season. We are in the middle of fall switching over towards winter and it was a great time to reflect on seasons changing. It also opened up some great questions and discussions between my son and me.
The whole book is filled with great short and sweet facts that can open up some great conversations between you and your entire family. I particularly enjoyed the section that was called our purposeful designer has a sense of humor . It had some pictures of animals that look a little silly or bizarre. We had a few little giggles over that section for sure! We even had a little break off unit study on some of these animals just becasue they were neat. There are many times in the book that you could easily take some of the facts and go deeper with your children or even just for self education for yourself!
When this book goes over our amazing bodies it really does a great job with it. The complexity of the human body is hard to really grasp sometimes so the fact this book could pull you in to it like it does is great. It even explained what the human appendix is for which I had no clue about!
There was a free study guide that you can download and really turn this into a curriculum with. I looked over it and used some of the questions to open up more conversations with my son. This book was so neat that I wanted my son to be able to just grab it and go and read which he did many times like you can see in the picture below. I felt like adding in a “school” element might detract from that so I choose not to use it but it is really good and I think if it right for your child and your situation then you should certainly use it. We may look at using it later on in his school career.
This beautiful book retails for $18.95 and would be a great Christmas gift! We loved it and had a great time reading through it. It stays on our coffee table and I find myself reaching for it often just to look though it and enjoy it!
