Standard Deviants Accelerate Homeschool Courses Review
We recently got to review Standard Deviants Accelerate Homeschool Courses which is put out by Standard Deviants Accelerate. It is an online learning program designed for ages 8 through adult. Homeschoolers can purchase the course for use by one student for $99 for a year, or $24.95 per month for regular classes and AP courses are available for one student for $14.95 per month.
I used this with my 4th grader who thought that this was the funniest curriculum her has ever gotten to use. We looked through the classes they offered and he decided he wanted to try the US History class. This one was for 9th grade but as with many homeschoolers I knew a couple of tweaks could be made to make it work for us.
I found that this curriculum was really user friendly. It was easy to set up my teacher section and assign the class that I wanted my son to take. There is a really great webinar you can watch that explains everything you need to know about getting going.Once we got all of that set up all my son had to do was log into his class and just precede to the next lesson.
When he logged into the History class we would talk and go over what he already knew about the topic we were going to learn about. The history curriculum starts out asking the student to recall anything they know. I love the way this curriculum does that.
You can see it below-
After we discuss what he already knows then I have him watch the video. These videos are funny and entertaining. My son laughs and giggles through most of the video. I wasnt sure how he would do with a high school history class but the videos are clear and easy to understand. After he watched the video I would let him do the diagram section which would either have a map or a couple questions that he would answer. If he couldn’t answer them then we would go back through the video and watch it again. After the diagram he would go through the test and take it. He did well with the tests and when he didn’t know an answer I had him go back and watch the video. After the test we would look through it and talk about it. He would tell me about what he learned and what his favorite or most interesting part was. I would ask him what he learned that he thought I would like to know. I found this question made him really have to think back about what he had just watched.
You can see by the picture below what the video section looked like. You can also see the tabs on the picture. To get to the next section all you have to do is click on the tab. It is very user friendly for parents and kids.
The written part had some really good questions. I wouldn’t make him write them out becasue he is not a fan of writing. We would just talk about them and discuss them.
I liked this curriculum and so did my son. We actually took a break from it for a week so we could do a small unit study I had planned. Every day he would ask me if he could do the Standard Deviant one for history so he really enjoyed it. He also would pick up funny little sayings from the videos and repeat them a couple times a day and just giggle away.
We are going to work through some of the other subjects offered and see how he likes them, so keep your eyes open for an update to this review. Overall we really enjoyed the history on here and I think this website does a good job at making subjects fun. You should really check it out and see if you think it would work with your crew!
As with all my Old School House Review Crew Reviews, you dont have to just take my word on it! You can check out what lots of different families (all different sizes and teaching preferences) thought of this curriculum. I highly recommend that you go and check out a couple of the other reviews and take some time to look around the great websites and blogs you will be introduced too! I have found some of my new favorite blogs this way!
