Alphabet Sensory Bin! A super fun way to let kids learn through play! Adventures in Mindful Livings Letter Fun Series!

I am a big fan of sensory bins. A sensory bin or tray is just a tray or any container that you fill with several items for self directed play. Sensory Trays help with development of creativity, motor skills, and cognitive development. I love them because they let children learn through play which I am a huge fan of.

I have been going over  letters with my youngest so I thought it would be fun for me to make her an alphabet sensory bin. It was very easy to put together. I bought a package of magnetic letters from our local dollar store, bag of uncooked rice, and some dried beans.

For this alphabet sensory bin I filled a small container with the dried beans. I hid the magnetic letters down in the beans. Then I poured the bag of rice into the container.

I always put out a large flat sheet before I bring out any sensory bin or tray. This keeps clean up very easy. I highly recommend this!

I put out a wooden tray that has some containers so she could pour and dig in the alphabet sensory bin.

I wrote the entire alphabet on our small white board. We sang the alphabet song and I pointed to each letter as we sang the song.

I set her tray down and her alphabet sensory bin. I let her start to dig through it. She pulled out a letter and I would say the letter and then ask her if saw that letter up on our board. We did this with a couple of letters and then I just let her play. I didn’t want to put too much structure with this alphabet sensory bin. I think that can take some of the fun out of it. Plus I could tell she just was not into putting up the letters so I took the ones down we did and hid them in the sensory bin again for her. Never be afraid to let the child lead where they want to go!

She played in this alphabet sensory bin for about an hour. With a toddler that is a long time for something to hold their attention. She still asks to play in this alphabet sensory bin all the time so I know she really enjoyed it.

I hope I have given you some ideas or inspiration for making learning fun!
