Essential Skills Advantage Review

Essential Skills Advantage is an online reading and language learning program for grades K-6.  It covers reading, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary building, and grammar.

I mainly  used the program with my son (grade 4). He loves computers and has always enjoyed online programs so this was a great fit for him. Each day he had a different area he worked in.

This is what the parent portal looks like. You can pick what topic each kid will be working on that day .

This is the schedule my son worked on.

Monday- Reading Comprehension 4

Tuesday -Spell Master 4

Wednesday – Vocabulary Builder 4

Thursday- Grammar (Grades 3-5)

Each day I would log in to my parental portal and then simply click the topic I wanted him to work on that day. It very user friendly! This is what the student log in will look like each time you pick a different topic.

I wanted to show you an example of one of the first reading comprehensions pages he did.It was on chocolateso he was pretty happy about that!

He read the story and then would click on one o f these topics at the bottom of the page.

You can tell when I took this picture he had worked his way through almost all of these for this story. Each one is not long at all after the first week I actually increased how many he was supposed to do because he was flying through them. They ask simply but good questions like this one below.

After he would complete the section I could see that he had completed it and if I wanted to check how he did all I had to do was click on the  yellow star in the blue circle ( in the upper corner). It would take me to a page that shows me his grades so far.

Like I said above it is all really user friendly. My son really liked playing on here and I found it covered some great topics in a fun and easy way. He never gave me hard time about getting on and doing his work which does not always happen with this child in particular.

Another thing I really liked about Essential Skills Advantage was that I could switch around grades very easily. I think that is really great becasue on some things my son is above his grade level in and other things he is at grade level. This  option let me really customise it to exactly what he needed to work on at what level.

I also used  Essential Skills Advantage with my youngest daughter (3). All we worked on with her was the Complete Reading for Kindergarten. I wasn’t sure she would really get anything out of it but surprisingly she did.  She had a blast playing on it! The Kindergarten section is filled with some really neat topics that kids her age and older would really enjoy.  In the kindergarten area it covers everything from phonics to sight words.

 I was amazed at how much they had in that level for her. Most she could work through but some I had to sit with her on and explain them. Some of the fun games she played were ones like the picture below. It would ask her if the name matches the animal. It would say it outloud and she would have to click the X or the check. If she needed to hear it again she could click on the ear.

She enjoyed this section the picture vocabulary section most ( there are several sections). Everything was really easy for her to move around in and if she missed something it was easy to find out what she needed to do. 

 This is just really so much on here for her to work on. She is still really little so I don’t want her on the computer a large amount of time so I just let her get on and play for about 15 minutes. I kept an eye on what she was doing but I try not to do anything real structured with her. I would rather her have fun and play. The good thing about Essential Skills Advantage was she was playing and learning at the same time. she was also learning some really good computer skills which will benefit her in the future. After January we will pick up our lessons a little more and I’ll be using specific areas of the kindergarten to compliment what we are learning.

I really am a fan of Essential Skills Advantage! It was fun, easy to use, and taught both of my kids on the level they needed to be.If you are looking for a fun and easy online program to use with your kids then I suggest you check this one out!
