Jeremy’s Homemade French Onion Dip

homemade french onion dip @ Adventures in Mindful Living

One of our good friends asked if we could come up with a healthier homemade french onion dip to replace his favorite store bought version. With the super bowl coming up I thought this would be a perfect time to tackle this recipe (ok and I used to LOVE that French onion dip too). We came up with several recipes. Some were very healthy and tasted great but still didn’t get close to that french onion dip that we were trying to replicate.

*You may wonder why I didn’t like the french onion dip I could buy at the store. Next time you are at the grocery store pick up one of those French onion dips. Read the back label. There is no way you should be putting that stuff in your body. If it takes a chemist to make something taste good then you should really think about that.  Those chemicals that you cannot even pronounce are very bad for your body. Go ahead – Google some of those ingredients and see what they are, and what their side effects are. It will be enough for you to put that dip back down and slowly back away from it. Ok let me climb off my soap box and get back to the point.

I finally let my husband try to make it. Jeremy is a fantastic cook. I have never tasted anything of his that wasn’t great so I knew he could pull it off, and he did. This homemade french onion dip is so amazing! I could literally eat the whole recipe if no one would stop me. While he was in the kitchen he also came up with several other really great tasting Super Bowl snacks that we will be sharing throughout the week. Make sure you subscribe to my newsletter too because we will be sending out my favorite recipe he made in our newsletter on Friday. (I love my subscribers so I like to send them great recipes before they come out on the site every once in awhile!)

[box type=”shadow” ]A note about this recipe. If you are used to non dairy or vegan products go for the original recipe that I posted below. If you are not then I would recommend slowly switching over to complete non dairy. Before anyone sends me an email let me explain. I know nondairy is the best for you but in certain recipes it is harder to go full nondairy at first unless you are used to the flavor of that particular nondairy product. For us when we first started getting dairy out of our diet the non dairy sour cream that was available to us in our local stores did not taste the same as cow’s milk sour cream. We slowly made the switch over and for us that has made it stick. I would rather show you how to slowly switch over to eating like this and have it stick for the long term than tell you there is only one way and have you dump it before you ever really give it a chance to change your life. I want success for my readers and I recognize that everyone’s journey needs to be a little different. We now love this recipe with our non dairy sour cream but if you want a easier way to switch over try just replacing half with nondairy and the other with regular cow’s milk sour cream. Slowly work out the cow’s milk version and replace it with non dairy version. The goal is to figure out what works for you and your family.[/box]

Now on to the good part! The recipe!!

Jeremy’s Homemade French Onion Dip

Ingredients:

  • 1 yellow onion (diced)
  • A sprinkle of sugar (maybe ¼ tsp)
  • 1 Tbsp of oil (you can do this in water too if you don’t do oil. I use grape seed oil)
  • 16 oz nondairy Sour Cream (please see note above)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¾ tsp sea salt
  • 1tsp of onion powder
  • 1tsp of garlic powder
  • 1 tsp of dried minced onion

  1. Caramelize your onions .Heat up the oil in a frying pan and then dump your onions in. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions to help them caramelize. Don’t overcook the onions. You want them caramelized but still with a little crunch left in them. If you are cooking without oil just keep a close eye and add a little water to the pan to keep your onions from sticking. Once cooked set them aside to cool.
  2. In a large bowl mix the sour cream, black pepper, sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and minced onion together until they are really well combined.
  3. Now add the cooled minced onion to the sour cream mixture and mix well.
  4. Put the dip in an air tight container and let it chill in your fridge for a couple of hours or overnight. This lets the flavors really blend well together. You can eat it right away but it is better if you do this.

Very simple and easy! Now here comes my healthy suggestion. Cut up some veggies to go with this homemade french onion dip. The veggies will help you not eat as many chips as you would normally. I realize it is the Super Bowl and you are going to eat chips but you know I love little steps that lead to big changes and this is an easy way to take a small step. It is all about being mindful!

What are some of your small steps you take to make more mindful choices at celebrations?

  1. WOW! What a post!! I feel you on the bad food thing. I am working on eliminating all of the bad stuff from my diet. I can’t wait to test this recipe out on my husband. Thank you so much for sharing and linking up!

  2. Oooh, I bet it tastes great with the caramelized onion! I never thought of using that in a dip!

I came up with my healthy dip recipe years ago just because I happened not to have a packet of onion soup mix when I thought I did, and then I kept making it because it was cheaper and I had all the ingredients on hand, whereas I had been buying the soup mix only for dip. It wasn’t until I posted the recipe and did some research that I realized just how unhealthy that instant onion soup is!!!

    • I was the same way. I was looking for a dairy free recipe (me and dairy dont mix for several reasons) and I thought- well Ill just go get one of those packets and mix in some dairy free options. The healthiest one I found still had ingredients that I couldn’t pronounce, and a quick google of those weird ingredients had me quickly returning those packets to the grocery store shelf! I iwll have to pop over and check yours out! I think you can never have too many dip recipes!lol!
Oh and the onions totally make it!!
